Welcome!
The OTHS School Council is an advisory body comprised of parents, school staff and community representatives. The council meets once a month to receive news and progress reports from the Principal and teaching staff, and to provide support, as well as input into such educational and District matters as set out in the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board Policy P.014.SCO - School Councils. At each meeting we schedule various information sessions designed to keep parents abreast of current academic initiatives, special events upcoming at the school and important ways to stay informed and engaged in your student?s education. To understand the role of school councils better, please download the School Councils fact sheet.
New members are welcome at all times. Please contact Maggie Harvey, Chair, OTHS School Council at margaretharvey@rogers.com to learn more.

2010: Communication + Education = Participation
Council applied for and received $600 under the provincial "Parents Reaching Out School Grants" program. Our application linked the grant to specific events which are already planned at OTHS, such as scheduled council meetings and family events such as the Athletic Awards Night and Commencement. Our goal is to improve our communication with parents and families. We hope this will lead to increased parental participation.
2009: Seating: 8 rock benches
Council wanted to provide permanent seating for students at the front of the school. In the summer of 2009, 11.4 tons of rock were delivered to the school in the form of eight huge boulders. These were placed bench-like in shady spots in front of the building and have proved popular with students.
This project was supported financially by the Metcalfe Women's Institute and the Kenmore Women's Institute. The rocks were purchased from a local quarry owned by R. W. Tomlinson Ltd. They were delivered and positioned by the local business Smiley's Storage and Consignment Yard. Both businesses gave a discount for their services. The total cost for this entire project was $568.
2008- 09: Landscaping: 28 trees
In 2008 and 2009, School Council applied for and received two grants under the City of Ottawa Community TREE Planting Grant program, with a value of approximately $11,600. Thanks to this program, a total of 28 new trees have been planted on school property. A variety of mostly deciduous trees were planted at the back of the school, along the south and west property lines, and also several at the front of the school. Over the years, these trees will provide shade for students and community members, as they play and watch sports on our two sports fields.
